Find the folders taking up space
- Open DiskHelper and choose Scan Full Mac. To inspect one location, choose File > Scan Folder.
- Start with Top Sizes to find the largest items, or Treemap to compare them visually.
- Open a folder to see its contents. Use Back, Forward, or the path bar to move through the results.
Going Home or returning to a folder uses the same scan. Start another scan when you want updated sizes.
If you’re looking for one large download, scan Downloads first. A smaller scan gives you a focused list to review without mixing in unrelated folders.
If a folder is missing
A scan can only include files DiskHelper can read. If protected folders are skipped, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, enable DiskHelper, then scan again. This permission allows access to additional protected data. Apple’s privacy settings guide explains what it covers.
Mounted volumes are scanned separately. Select an external drive when you want to inspect the files stored there.
Review before cleaning up
Select files you recognize and choose Add to Cleanup. Open Cleanup to review the list before moving anything to Trash. DiskHelper blocks protected system files.
A large file is not necessarily unwanted. Check its location and contents, especially if it belongs to a project or an app you still use.
Next, choose a storage chart or review an app you no longer need.
